Ever get confused by DNS?

Trying to point a domain to a simple site builder feels like it should be easy, but for beginners it’s a confusing mess of registrars, DNS providers, and hosting.

I’m in a community where someone registered a domain at Tucows, originally had hosting with Siteground, and now wants to switch to Carrd. But where’s the DNS hosted? If it’s at siteground, you may end up paying for hosting you don’t use just to keep the DNS there. Or you could move the DNS back to Tucows. But what if you miss an entry, or get one wrong when copying them over?

It’s not hard once you’ve done it, but it’s daunting for beginners! The last thing anyone wants to do is mess something up.

There are many ways to do it, but I recommend this:

  1. Register your domain and update your DNS settings there. Godaddy and Namecheap are big names, but leave many people unhappy. I use Porkbun and like them a lot. I've seen others recommending Spaceship.com.
  2. When you're just starting you don't need a fancy website. A simple landing page will do. Carrd.co is perfect for this, and is less than $20... PER YEAR! Most newsletter service providers offer landing pages too, so you can get by without this if you want to save that $20 for something else.

That's it! Sweet and simple. If you ever decide to change web hosts, you can just update a few DNS settings with your registrar. No need to keep moving them from hosting provider to hosting provider.

Do you manage your DNS where you registered your domain, or somewhere else?
Reply and let me know! I love hearing from you.

Thanks, Tom
